What is a credit reference agency?

A credit reference agency collects information on people's credit history from various sources including utility companies, lenders and phone companies. Public data can also be used, such as the electoral roll, information on County Court Judgments and bankruptcy data. In the UK there are three major credit reference agencies: Callcredit, Equifax and Experian.
